Donna met an African Grey parrot

A chance visit to Bishan Park let me learn that the swing within that sculpture on Recycle Hill was always meant to be a swing but an unfortunate welding mistake ensured that kids will never have to fight over who gets that swing first.

The hunt for the Raohe Street Night Market dog

red lanterns at raohe street night marketgateway at raohe street night market

Roahe St Night Market is not far from Wufenpu, so it always made sense for us to hit both spots in the same day. I’m not a big fan of night market food really, but Mr P is, so a tour of the night markets is something we do when we visit Taiwan.

While we were there, this dog caught our attention because it was walking along by itself but was dressed in a harness with lights. So we didn’t think it was a stray.

mysterious patrolling dog at raohe street night market

We soon lost the dog in the crowd, but bumped into other shop dogs instead.

dogs at raohe street night marketdachshund at raohe street night market

Including a dachshund manning a stall for dog toys and accessories. Life is hard for a shop dog. At first the dachshund was snoozing on his perch in a round ball, but was poked awake by tourists who were wondering if the round ball of fur was “real”. – –

raohe street night market view

Anyway, we made our way around the market and what do you know, we suddenly found the dog we were hunting for. I couldn’t see the dog very well when we were following it. I only saw that it had blinking lights on. But now that we had a chance to look at it, it actually was wearing pretty halter straps, with the lights. So I couldn’t understand why it was left to its own devices outside.

raohe street night market dog

Since Mr P was buying food from the stall. I grabbed the chance to ask the staff more about the dog that appeared to be quite happy hanging around them at that moment.

The young man denied that the dog belonged to the stall. Apparently, nobody in the market knew where the dog came from! He shared that they only know that every evening without fail, the dog will visit, all geared up, and make its rounds around the market as if on patrol.

And during its rounds, it does what all dogs do best, hang around and beg for food. Hah!

raohe street night market dog

Certainly looks quite excited at the food smells if you ask me…

I guess we shall never solve the mystery of the patrolling Roahe Street Night Market dog. Maybe you can solve it when you next visit. ;)

Three Important Skills a dog must have this Halloween for Photos!

Meanwhile, here are three dogs who will show you the Three Important Skills a dog must have this Halloween to Treat or Trick for more Treats! :P

Dawnie the Dachshund @macdawnalds says:

You need to have some Acting Skills to make your own scary face, especially when your mom has no time to make you a costume! ;)

Tiana the Mongrel @stichy88 says:

You need to be skilled at Misdirection.

She’s pretending to be a Snuffleupagus by the way. :P

Lucky the Yorkie @chocbanaa says:

It’s easier when your human gives you more options on what to wear. Costumes and accessories definitely help you up the Showmanship!

Can you believe Lucky’s five looks are all made from a $2 Halloween cape from Daiso? Ingenious!

Now I really have to ponder on Donna’s costume because we will be at that first event right at the top of the list – the Halloween Picnic and Parade at Marina Barrage. Can’t wait to see all the other dogs and what sort of strange and wondrous getup they will be in. Haha!

Note: Much thanks to the linked Instagram accounts for permission to use their photos.

and Heart Like a Dog.

Just some photos from our stay at W Hotel

Posts will continue as usual but responses on social media may be sloooowww… :P

We are going on a brief staycation. The last time we went was in January, where we stayed at W Hotel, Sentosa with it’s quirky animal head and human body parts themed decor (pictured above and below) and lots of background dance music.

It’s a really colourful hotel but when you transform it into black and white, it starts to look sort of macabre perhaps? Haha!

Anyway, we had a great time checking out the restuarants within the hotel and along the Quayside Isle. I particularly enjoyed the buffet breakfast at The Kitchen Table.

And sunset along the quay.

We’ll still be heading for Sentosa this time round, but staying near Universal Studios, Resorts World Sentosa. Yup, four years after it officially opened in 2014, we’re finally visiting. OMG!

Unfortunately, we can’t take Donna to staycation with us. I can’t imagine her on the Universal Studios rides anyway. But I’m sure she will look forward to going to her own vacation plans – i.e. day care for those days – if she only knew. Haha.

This is boring human. I want to play with real dog friends!

Coming up on Tuesday, some photos of Donna the last time we went for daycare. ;)

I love how spanking new this whole place looks.

Because it was just newly opened in August, somewhitecookie told me. :D That red cloth was still hanging over the entrance when we went. I wonder if its still there. Haha!

Why Dog Dot Cafe is awesome-sauce

  • Nice space for dogs to play
  • Bright, airy environment
  • Food for dogs available – Donna ate it
  • We hear the nasi lemak is good
  • No worries about not getting a table since it’s relatively unknown and out of the way, lol
  • And Rudolph the Chihuahua
  • Great service, friendly owners
  • Opens until 11pm Fridays and Saturdays

Why Dog Dot Cafe is not so hot

  • Human food is hit and miss.
  • It is relatively out of the way for people.
  • The cafe space is L-shape and will have blind spots where you can’t see dog depending on where you are seated.
  • Sometimes closed for private events, so best to call in advance to check if they are open.

Space management

There is a small landing area at the shop entrance before the doggie gate that keeps the dogs within the main cafe space. I love that dogs don’t get to crowd at the entrance to welcome and inadvertently block you from entering the cafe. So that’s a plus point for me.

Tables are lined along the ways creating a central space for dogs to play and makes it easier for humans to monitor. Another plus. However, because the shop is L-shop, there will be blind spots if patrons were seated further inside the store. Here’s the visual reference again.

So bodily moving around to supervise will be necessary.

Socialisation

We went on a weekday, and were about the only customers at the shop. And that was ideal for us since we were there for dinner and didn’t really want to have to supervise the dog all that much.

But if you want to bring your dog to a dog cafe for the specific purpose of socialisation, this cafe is perfect because they have an outgoing in-house chihuahua to play with your dog.

Donna (age 5) vs Rudolph (age 2) Mongrel plays with Chihuahua #mutt #chihuahua #sgdogs

View on Instagram

Rudolph is not impressed that Donna towered over him. I can be tall too!!

They played and they played and they played.

I’mma gonna tell you a secret that you can’t tell cookie, ok?

All this mouthing, I was really quite worried because Donna’s mouth is bigger than the chihuahua and could accidentally hurt him in her enthusiasm.

The Human Menu

So when the food came, we gave them a time out. And because Donna kept wanting to go play with Rudolph the Chi but the humans rather eat with some piece of mind. They kept her on the lead. On the bench where Rudolph couldn’t reach her. So Donna got the pleasure of staring at us eat.

And stare she did. #evilhumans

Anyway here’s the menu from Dog Dot’s facebook:

And this was what the humans ordered:

Truffle fries

Cheesesticks – basically melted cheese between fried bread

Ice chocolate with salted cheese cream and Dog Dot Milk Tea (with palm sugar)

Melty Chicken Yappie Burger

Cajun Roast Chicken

Curry Chicken with Bread

The food was OK, slightly expensive given the quality in relation to the price. The one item we will definitely shy away from the next time we were there was the Curry with Bread.

Nope, Cookie is not impressed with the curry with bread at all. *No we didn’t really feed him human food, LOL*

The Doggie Menu

And this is what we got:

I don’t remember what meat we got for the dogs, but you can see for yourselves the serving size. ;)

Donna spat out her rice the last time we got it for her at Taz Cafe, so I thought I’ll try pasta this time round.

She ate Every Single Bit.

The good thing about pasta is. It is solid and bigger than rice so it’s easy to handle and sort of make her practise her commands while feeding her at the same time. I sometimes do that when I get too busy in the day and have no time to train with her.

So yes, the food was a hit with the dogs. ;) There is still too much carbs for my liking, but as a once in a while meal, I suppose it’s nothing the dog can’t handle.

Our notes on this cafe for dogs

Location We parked some distance away not realising we could park nearer, since we were unfamiliar with the area. It is a little secluded but the shophouse the cafe is in, sits diagonally across the road from the Holy Covenant Methodist Church. So just use that as the landmark to find if you get lost.

Floorplan The space itself holds about 8-10 tables. There is enough space for small medium dogs to run around and play when we were there. Larger dogs will likely need more space if there were more than two to three of them.

Service & Facilities Service was good. And the owners were friendly enough.

I like that it is immediately obvious where the pee tray and water bowl is, because yes, I believe in setting the dog up for success. You’re not gonna be setting the dog up for success with regards toilet training, if the cafe hides the pee tray, methinks. :P

Service & Food Food is average. But then taste is a very individual thing. I know some people recommend the truffle fries, the cheese sticks and the nasi lemak. The Furry Tales also enjoyed their meal there.

Socialisation Because there are currently not as many patrons as the shop is able to serve at a time, this is a great place to set up play dates with friends, without having to worry that there will be other dogs with owners who can’t manage or handle them to spoil your day.

And of course, because a dog should be exposed to as many breeds as possible as part of his socialisation process, this cafe offers a very outgoing, sociable chihuahua, who makes a fun companion.

Hope you find this review useful. Brighten my day and leave a comment! ;P Or follow me on Facebook.

How do I start cycling with dog?

So, after the Walk/Run/Cycle event with the Dogs of Instagram Singapore, I started thinking, what are the knowledge gaps that we have that we should have taken the time to educate ourselves on before we start cycling with dog.

At Sun Petgamart swimming pool for Birthday Party

So the other day, the border collies Lycan and Lexie invited Donna to their birthday party where they have prepared seafood for the kiddos.

Donna examines the packet seafood.

The party was held at Sun Petgamart’s swimming pool.

Donna, who has never really swam before, wasn’t sure what she was supposed to do here. So she wondered around and around the edge of the pool.

I don’t know all these other dogs, human. There’s not enough space to walk here with all the water…

We planned to slowly get her used to the water. The brown dawgs  advised before:

… find a banked area of a pond or lake where they can go in slowly and not jump right in. But we try to get them excited and all heated up playing and fetching around the edge of the pond and then toss the toy in the water. Not far just to the edge (hard in a pool if you can find a clean puddle, you could start there). What ever you do, do not toss or otherwise push her in. Even if she jumps in and goes under it might startle her so be prepared. It is not uncommon for it to take many trips before the dog will go all the way in the water (and some is just breeding too). Make sure it is a warm day and the water is warm….most important! Good luck!

But the occasion with so many dogs running around, just didn’t seem suitable to put the advice into action. She was just too distracted and she was never really toy motivated out of doors anyway.

So at that point in time, poor Donna hadn’t really come to love the water or to enjoy it yet. Not like Sir Toby the Golden Retriever :D Toby was definitely the perfect guest for this party.

The slippery slope that deterred him from getting out of the pool on his own was no dampener. His human slave was on hand to… well, give his less than 35kg self a hand or two.

Yup he had fun heading in, being carried out and heading in again…. Several times, repeat and rinse. :P Quite a work out for the human, no?

I thought perhaps the slope was difficult for dogs in general, but Toby’s human told me that some dogs don’t find it difficult although Toby did. Toby, whyyyyyyy? :P

Anyway, I guess Lycan and Lexie would have met all the invited dogs before, so mingling is easy for them. Toby certainly seems to be pretty happy walking in synch with Lycan there.

Clockwise from top left: 1. Toby with Lycan 2. Tugger 3. Tobby with Tugger in the foreground 4. Lexie

Tugger the puppy not so much. He is like Donna trying to make sense of the pool and the other dogs all around. Donna tried her best to initiate play with various dogs that weren’t in the pool, without much success. She ended up persistently approaching Tugger.  Tugger did his best to avoid her so I had to reign her in after a while to avoid her stressing him out.

But not for long, because what is a birthday without cake! Donna was so excited she jumped on the bench and we had to call her off it again in case she tried to eat it all on her own. *Oops!*

Perhaps Toby thought it was his birthday?

Nope, it’s Lycan and Lexie’s.

Can I have some cake please? Cobie asked.

Not before we wish Lycan Happy Birthday again (it’s this week!) ;)
