Happy Chinese New Year of the Horse!!

Donna is grumpy because she thinks it should be the year of the dog, not the year of the horse!

OK, just kidding. If you think she is grumpy because of the new shirt she is wearing, then you can’t be more wrong. She was more than happy to get into it since we’ve been working on associating it with walks and treats.

What she was unhappy about was having to sit on the bench/table, since she perceived it to be unstable. It is actually quite safe but it would take more time than we spent on taking the photo to convince her of that. :P Regardless, she is still sitting there, good job my dear girl!

I took a closer shot of the golden horses between her forepaws, so as to capture the detail of the horses. Unfortunately, despite the auspicious red and prosperous gold colours, Mr P decided this photo cannot be used because we have cut off her head. Unlike the Queen of Hearts, culturally we do prefer the heads and tails of animals stick around intact.

So without even discussing the finer points of composition, etc, the below is already a bad photo.

That said, I did spend some idle minutes feeding it into a new app I downloaded, with interesting black-red and black-gold results. I call it demon horse and dog from hell. I probably should shut up since I keep uttering inauspicious things like that. :P

Happy Chinese New Year! It is the year of the horse. In case you are wondering, the first two Chinese characters in the photo play on the word “horse” to mean “on the horse”, but also to mean “immediately”. The last two characters can be read to mean “to prosper” or to imitate the barking sound of the dog (hence referencing Donna). Four simple characters suddenly taken on a more complex and layered meaning because of the different ways the words can be read figuratively or literally, tying in to the picture as a whole.

  1. Donna, you look so adorable in that shirt! My husband is Chinese so we’re celebrating Chinese New Year today by eating homemade Chinese dumplings. They’re very good, especially since I wasn’t the one who made them. ;)

    • Hahaha… your husband must be a great cook. Mr P doesn’t cook anything, except instant noodles, haha!! Awesome that you have two cultures in a family because you have more holidays to celebrate! :P I gotta take a picture of Donna’s back, that shirt’s design looks like something made for a toddler… hah! Have a great festive day over there, Dawn :) We’ll be busy out visiting relatives and eating lots of junk food :P

  2. Gung Hay Fat Choy. Or as every Chinese says to me, “Hello, Fat Lady”, it isn’t over until YOU sing.

    • LOL, that’s Cantonese that congratulates you for wealth, because we all dream of getting rich!!! LOL… no Fat Ladies over here since in Mandarin, it’s pronounced “Gong Xi Fa Cai” :P Have a great day today :)
