This dog inspects the goods at Wufenpu, Taipei

west highland terrier dog at wufenpu

We were crossing the junction when I spied this serious little dog sitting right in front of the clothes shop outside Wufenpu. He never moved the whole time I was there taking photos.

I assumed he belonged to the shop, and perhaps his job there was to inspect the goods being delivered to the shop.

Seemed to be doing a good job :P and all without moving an inch from his sit position!

He’s a very solemn little boy dog, this one is.

Wufenpu & Sassy Dog

Wufenpu is another rabbit warren of alleys lined with tiny shops selling clothes and accessories. The area is a  garment wholesale paradise, stocking clothes and fashion stores in the city. So it is the place for bargain hunting tourists and locals.

The prices are low and correspondingly the quality can be rather cheap. You have to have the time and a good eye to pick up items that won’t fall apart too soon, among the chaos and poorer quality clothes within.

Me, it just gives me a headache really. So I just skim discount racks to buy wear and throw T-shirts like this one:

I also wanted to check out the store for dogs there called – Sassy Dog. It’s real small outlet and I was disappointed that they didn’t have anything in Donna’s size. This store is good for small dogs, and I guess it made sense since the Taiwanese has sometimes been described as treating their dogs as fashion accessories.

Why T.A.Z. Cafe is awesome-sauce

  • Some space for dogs to play
  • Bright, airy environment
  • Food for dogs available.

Why T.A.Z. Cafe is not so hot

  • Human food is average.
  • Donna doesn’t like the food for dogs.
  • Sometimes closed for private events, so best to call in advance to check if they are open.

Space management

There is a small landing area at the shop entrance before the doggie gate that keeps the dogs within the main cafe space. I love that dogs don’t get to crowd at the entrance to welcome and inadvertently block you from entering the cafe.

Donna and dachshund stuck at the doggie gate, checking out the new arrivals

There is some play space towards the front of the cafe

But the fact is the dogs will run around the centre island of chairs and tables too.

Depending on where you are seated, there will be some blind spots. So it may be hard to supervise them unless you follow your dog around.

The dog menu

Donna taste tests the Dory Fish Rice with Milk Sauce

I mixed it up because I know Donna wouldn’t eat the rice and cucumbers by themselves.

Donna picks out the cucumbers and spits it on the floor – –

She decides there’s too much rice and not enough fish to make it palatable. So she “generously” leaves it to the dachshund.

Verdict: Not the right menu for Donna! Too much carbs, too little meat. Nope, rejected.

The human menu

Menu is pretty limited. The mains we ordered are average. The starters appear slightly pricier than average.

Where to answer the call of nature

Leban Park is just opposite the shophouse where T.A.Z. Cafe & Bistro resides.

Set dog up for success so she doesn’t do it in the cafe when other patrons are eating. ;)

Our notes on this cafe for dogs

Location Easy to find. There is a Pet Lovers Centre outlet right next door so it’s very convenient to just hop over and get something in a jiffy. Pet lovers in the North will be happy to get something so accessible in the area.

Floorplan The space itself holds about 10 tables. There is enough small for small medium dogs to run around and play when we were there.  But I imagine it will be cramp when all the chairs are taken. So not such a great space for big dogs perhaps.

Service & Facilities Even though the cafe was relatively empty when we got there, there didn’t appear to be service staff available. So I self-serviced, picked up the menu by the doggie gate and picked a table for Donna and I. I sat for a pretty long time perusing the menu while waiting for Mr P. He was looking for a place to park. We were able to get some service when he joined us.

When I was there, a pee tray was not immediately visible but there is a bucket and mop to the back of the shop. Somewhitecookie assures me there is a pee pan somewhere, so look for that if your dog needs it.

Communal water bowls are available.

The shop appears to offer day care services, but I didn’t ask more about it.

Service & Food Average. I probably will not order the mains the next time I come around, nor food for the dog since she didn’t enjoy it.

Socialisation There were dogs who were not comfortable with other dogs approaching them when we were there. And that’s ok because the dog was kept close to the owner, and I should do my own part and keep Donna from being overly friendly with other dogs who may not welcome it.

It is always necessary to monitor and supervise your dog even if there are no dogs appearing to be aggressive. When we were there, the dachshund did appear to pick up some bites/scratches from a dog he was playing with without the owner realising until she checked her dog later.

Hope you find this review useful. Brighten my day and leave a comment! ;P Or follow me on Facebook.

It’s some marketing gimmic, but I imagine the resulting photo can be pretty cute ;)

Why Paw Pet-radise is awesome-sauce

  • Space for pet to play
  • Comfortable environment
  • Awesome yummy meatballs for dogs
  • Parking is easy
  • Bonus for nightowls – opened until 2am Fridays and Saturdays

Why Paw Pet-radise is not so hot

  • Different daily opening hours can be confusing
  • This place is popular so weekends are typically packed
  • Human food is said to be average.
  • Sometimes closed for private events/emergencies, and their Facebook does not seem to be updated since June, so best course call *65 9747 3295 to check if they are open. The day we were there for a private party, some customers had to wait outside because they were not aware that the shop was closed for private party.

Somehow just not the space for the human :P

We’ve attempted to visit Paw Pet-radise before but it was so packed. The human stopped at the front door, looked in saw no empty tables, saw a giant dog blocking the front entrance and decided to head home instead. LOL

I don’t know why, the glass door with the doggie gate immediately after is just such a huge mental block for me to want to step in! It’s just me I guess…. more comfortable with there being a landing area between the main door and the doggie gates that protect the dogs from running out of the cafe, such as at Happy 3 Bites and Taz cafe.

And given the time taken making that wasted trip the first time, I didn’t really want to visit again. :P Haha!

A hot favourite with some

But Paw Pet-radise certainly has its share of loyal fans. And when we were invited for a doggie birthday party to be held at Paw Pet-radise, the human was happy to attend with Donna.

And honestly speaking, there is nothing to quibble about the play space which is comparable to the other cafes with bigger spaces.

Paw Pet-radise Play Space

And the cafe did impressed as it pulled no stops to prepare yummy doggy fare for Paris’ carnival theme party. I mean, look at this cake! Each dog was also given a doggie bento to bring home from paw-petradise.

The human microwaved it for Donna at home and plated half of it as shown in the picture below (top left). That’s half a slice of fish on a mound of pumpkin rice (I think). The bento included vegetables and fruits which the human used as garnish on and around the fish. The fruits (blueberries, honey melon, apples and strawberries) she sliced up and combined with plain yoghurt to make fruity frozen cubes for Donna (pictured below bottom right).

Dog party food

Donna totally enjoyed that slice of cake (pictured above – top right) and the other treats from a different dog treat maker.

So yes, the human was very impressed by Paris’ generosity, and Paris’ humans appeared very happy with Paw Pet-radise’ services for the party . Haha!!

And of course, all the dogs are just happy to be around the great company and abundant doggy meatballs.

Happy doggie customers

This dog in Jiufen is the King of Purses

This dog looks like a toy on a throne of purses. But he’s real alright!

He guards the purses in this leather goods shop with two other layabouts… so you can definitely tell who’s the hardworking one here! :P

So where are these purse-guarding dogs exactly??

Welcome to Jiufen, the fabled town that gave Hayao Miyazaki the inspiration for the mysterious lantern-lit town in the movie Spirited Away.

Enter the rabbit warren of narrow streets and alleys lined with red lanterns…

… that is not scary at all in bright daylight. :P Even though we are not right into the tourist season yet, this tourist spot is already packed with them… despite the seasonal rain!

We were there around lunchtime, but our driver advised that there are no good places to eat here.

“Just try some of the street food for fun,” he said. “Look at the knick knacks they sell.” He explained that this is really more of a tourist town with shops geared toward tourists.

“Locals don’t come here.”

Where do the locals go then?

“If you live in the north, you holiday in the south. If you live in the south, you holiday in the north. But mostly we fly out to other countries. ”

Right.

So we meandered about and tried the food… including this – World’s #1 Mushroom Under the Sky / 天下第一菇

Look at the whole stack of them… sure is a lot of #1 mushrooms in Taiwan. Hah! Cut into bite size for convenient munching while walking. ;P

I didn’t take a lot of pictures due to the rain. Boo. But this photo shows you the sort of elevation we were at… and also the rolling mist.

Nothing much to see here but mist, so back we head into the alleyways.

Thought we’ll rest our feet at a ramshackle teahouse. (not pictured)

And this was the view to the right…

… and to the left. Feels like a whole different world?

After the break, we headed on for Pingxi from Jiufen.

How to get to Jiufen

If you can, take a taxi to hit more places in a day! If not, Jiufen is still very accessible by public transport.

By Train: From Taipei, take the train north to Ruifang Station. After exiting the station, cross the street to the bus stop next to the Wellcome Supermarket and board the Keelung Transit bus towards Jiufen. The bus trip takes roughly 15 minutes, and the fare is NT$21 during the week,NT$15 during weekends/holiday.

By Bus (via MRT): From Zhongxiao Fuxing (忠孝復興), Brown and Blue lines, leave from Exit 1 and take bus route 1062 (Keelung Bus) to Jiufen. The ride is about 1 hour and the fare is NT$90. Be sure to sit on the left side of the bus to enjoy scenic views of Northern Taiwan.

Donna goes to her first birthday party – title updated

So, one and a half years ago Donna started her new life with us. Which meant she was pretty friendless, since we didn’t really have any friends with dogs.

We tried taking her back to the shelter to visit on occasion, but she didn’t seem very friendly with the dogs there. We sometimes bump into neighbours on walks and she did make some BFFs but those times we bump into them are few and far in between. All our walking times are just too inconsistent, I guess. We tried meeting up with other dogs on the pets forum, but Donna didn’t find any buddies there either.

It was only when we started our Instagram account that suddenly we were able to connect with other dogs and their humans. And it’s really great because everyone can see each other’s pets and how they are getting on on a more or less regular basis. And somehow, these great bunch of people are just more active and enthusiastic about meeting up and socialising our dogs in general. More active than lazy us!

So we were really happy to be invited to a birthday party by one of our instafriends!

Yesh, I can haz birthday pup cake and eat it with my mouth open, human.

You know what, Donna doesn’t like biscuits. She takes it and usually throws it on the floor. But this one on the pupcake, she actually ate it. ;)

Looking forward to more good times ahead with the Dogs of Instagram, Singapore. ;)
