Mikki only plays with humans

Mikki isn’t comfortable with Donna and Donna can be a bit of a rascal at times in trying to get the golden retriever to play. Thankfully our mongrel knows better than to encroach too much into Mikki’s space. You can see the gap she leaves for Mikki in this picture.

I’m just fake rushing at you — is that what she could be thinking?
She made an about turn there and raced away again.
You are not my dog buddy, says the golden retriever

Let me be or let me leave
Carefree dogs at the beach

And like humans, if you don’t want to play, there is always someone else to play with. Ally, the silky maltese puppy, and Donna hit it off really well.

And where did Mikki go?

She’s not sitting play time out. Here is another stubborn dog who spent most of that time we spent at the beach sitting just like that in the water. Someone should have made a placard for her. One that said, “I’m going to stay in here until you come in and throw that stick!”

I thought she was hilarious :P Stubbornly so.

Note: I don’t really know anything about Golden Retrievers but always thought they family dogs. But after a comment from 2browndawgs, I read on wikipedia that “They were bred as gundogs to retrieve shot waterfowl such as ducks and upland game birds during hunting and shooting parties”… so it seems like Mikki was trying to do her job?! :D And we spent the afternoon ignoring her and paying attention to the sociable dogs running around instead! Oh man! Sorry Mikki!

  1. That’s very adorable! The photography work is very good, and I hope you keep it up!

  2. Soo cute! Looks like they are having a great time ^_^

    Happy Friday

    • They were! Even Mikki, who persist in soaking herself in the sea. She must be enjoying staying her ground or she won’t stay there alone for the whole afternoon… right? :P

  3. LOL for the last photo :D

    • She was really funny! Indeed! Never knew Goldies are so stubborn… but then I’ve never really met many goldies :P Have a great start to the week!

  4. Yes, the last photo makes the series whole!

  5. Love seeing the pics of Donna having fun at the beach.

    • It was fun! But clean up not so fun… *wishes there’s an automatic dog washer somewhere* :P Have a great start to the week!

  6. Of course the Golden was in the water…lol!

    • I don’t really know anything about Golden Retrievers but always thought they family dogs. But after your comment, I read on wikipedia that “They were bred as gundogs to retrieve shot waterfowl such as ducks and upland game birds during hunting and shooting parties”… so it seems like Mikki was trying to do her job?! :D And we spent the afternoon ignoring her and paying attention to the sociable dogs running around instead! 7. Whahahahahha! Oh, I just love that first shot with Donna in action. And these other shots are just hilarious, especially with the captions. I can see myself and Simba in Mikki. We like to be ‘left alone’ hehehehe

    • Really, Mikki stood in the water the whole time despite not having the fun times she wants – playing fetch in the water. Perhaps you and Simba would have more sense and sit yourselves on a picnic mat somewhere, enjoy the breeze… some food.. drink… :P Have a relaxing weekend :)

      • hehehe, I just love that shot. Oh yes, that would be just what we’d like. :D

  8. Great to see Donna in action – she looks like she’s having a lot of fun!

    • Oh yes, she enjoyed it so much, I can now finally understand why Ruby gets to go off-leash so often. Nothing beats seeing them having fun and being so carefree, vs having that joy contained with a limitation. :)

  9. So cute! Maya likes to stay away from Pierson at times, too. Pierson is just too rambunctious for her. I’d say Pierson and Donna would make great playmates, but Pierson only likes Maya. Maya would have fun with Donna, though, unless Donna got too rough. :)

    • I use to worry if Donna is too rough, but now I worry less since she has played safely with two little dogs. :P Does that make sense or am I just floating in a false security bubble over here? :P

  10. this was so much fun to read. :)

  11. My Golden’s have know to be unsociable at times but only if there is important business to be done…..like retrieving.

    • The more I learn about retrievers with their obsession with retrieving, the more I find them adorably amusing. Since they generally ignore Donna, I have no real opinion about them or insight into their personalities. Hence previously, I just found them beautiful, specifically when they appear in the water in your photos Jo :P JHaha!

      • They have been bred to retrieve for hundreds of years and you can’t get it out of them. Some are more obsessive than others. Mine play really hard together up until about 8 years of age, then the playing is not so important. Tell Donna to hang in there maybe one of these days she can find a retriever to play with her. :)

  12. Love this! I grew up with a sweet golden who was a lousy hunting dog but a great family pet.

    • Goldens do seem to make great family pets. A lot of families prefer them over here in our country. I’m glad one has brought much joy to you growing up :) Donna is our first dog. Before that we have had no contact with dogs and are very much dog idiots! Have a great week ahead!
