Street Cats Caterwauling

Phoneography Challenge, the Phone as your Lens: Nature – Street Cats Caterwauling

Apps used: Camera+, Snapseed, VSCOcam, Whitagram

I used to live on the 4th floor, so there would be nights when I could hear the sound of street cats carried up in the air from downstairs. But I have never seen the cats in action. They always seemed to be lying around lazily instead.

I was walking my dog, Donna, down the stairs intending to go home after our walk when a cat streaked past us and disappeared into the drains. Then I heard them. Two cats facing off from where the first cat had ran away from. One ran, the other gave chase, past us and up the flight of steps that we can just came down from.

They were too far an iPhone, so I took a video for fun.

They didn’t seem to be moving from the steps, so I grew bolder and went nearer, but not too near. The photo above has been cropped so that the cats take up more of the space and can be seen better.

I don’t know much about cat body language, but this page tells me to note their ears that are slightly pinned back defensively, and the lowered tail that curves slightly upward, a sign of defensive aggression. Unlike dogs, cats can lay down and expose their tummies, follow by an attack when they are highly defensive. Of course, the cat laying on the step is not feeling defensive towards me.

They were wary of me but reluctant to break it up. They probably would have scattered though, if I went close enough.

A white patch on my dog’s paw pad

  1. Oh, body language, indeed–these felines are on the prowl, probably defending territory. Or…Nicely captured. Happy Phoneography Monday.

Considering they have been spay/neutered, evidence by the clipped ears, I would say it is territorial :P Thank you, Sally :)

  2. Caterwauling, indeed!! I love plays on and playing with language as you can see by my title today, too. Good cat-ch.

  3. Liken the new site. Great job!

  4. Great pic of the kitties! Yes, they do seem a tad wary and ready for a skirmish. We have three cats, and one of them has turned a little feral. She used to sleep with Andi, but ever since she snuck out one day and was gone for two, she hasn’t been the same. She slinks and scurries away, with only the briefest glimpse of her tail as she disappears. We call her our ghost cat.

Congrats on the move, and to a safe and healthy holiday season!

    Take care,
Paul (Andi says hi! : )

Oh the poor ghost cat! I’m sorry to hear that, Paul. You and Andi and the cats have a great holiday season too!

  5. Congrats on the move! We’ll ask you for your advice when we decide to make our move!

  6. Wow, that is an incredible photo. You are quite talented!

  7. Excellent job, on the photo and the vine! All of that is very familiar for someone who has had cats for over 50 years… Happy Phoneography Monday and it’ll be fun to see your site come together! what widget did you use to get the Instagram button with the other social media links?

    • pljx@live.com.sg

It’s a novelty to me since I never had a cat and never saw them fighting :P The social media buttons are not made by widget, I just found free icons on softicons.com, with the appropriate CC license and coded it in html in a text box widget.

  8. Love the photo! Great shot. I think cats are so fascinating. What does Donna do when you guys see them on walks?

    • pljx@live.com.sg

      a) she feels particularly frisky and sniffs at and play bows the cat, or
      b) looks away because the grass and every thing else is more interesting than the cat

either one :P that temperamental animal!

The cats are more predictable. Eyes trained on the dog like radars and the head swivels to track the dog until we go out of range. Cats are fascinating alright!

  9. Sounds like a mean fight, but they’re just squaring off. Maya & Pierson liked listening to them.
