Omori Hiroko teeth brushing book

牙齿一家和牙刷超人 – Chinese picture book review

A fantastical tale of bad influences and how a superhero saves the day with kicks and punches – and yes, 牙齿一家和牙刷超人 is about brushing teeth.

Looking for realistic Montessori-aligned books instead? Escape here!
If not, read on.

牙齿一家和牙刷超人 (Teeth Family and Toothbrush-Man) is written originally in Japanese by Omori Hiroko.

Right from the start Omori Hiroko’s picture book paints a trippy picture of teeth that actually moves at will in your mouth. Having fun. Just like little children.

simple mid-autumn festival song for toddlers

月儿圆圆 – A Simple Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival Song for Toddlers

Lately, Little P has been making up his own nonsense chinese lyrics to go with tunes that he knows. In this post, I would like to share with you – 月儿圆圆 – a simple Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival Song for those of you whose toddlers love singing!

When it comes to helping my little one be comfortable and confident in speaking his mother tongue, the three main things I find helpful for me are:

  1. Modeling speaking the Chinese language by itself (i.e. no mixing with English/Singlish) 95% of the time
  2. Singing songs to him in Chinese
  3. Reading lots of Chinese books with him.

Therefore, besides a song relevant to the occasion, in the later part of the post I will also detail some of the books we are reading this Mid-Autumn Festival week!

Let’s get started!

stringing lanterns

Mid-Autumn Festival stringing lanterns activity for toddlers – Montessori at home

I had not thought of it in that way until I read on threeminutemontessori that stringing paper lanterns can also be a variation of the lacing/threading activity. So that’s something Little P and I did together this time round instead of I doing it by myself.

Stringing traditional paper lanterns

This was a very fast project for me simply because I had the pack of mini lanterns already in my stash. So it was just a matter of reusing some long twine to string the lanterns and hanging them on existing wall hooks that we use annually for Xmas and CNY decorations.

Little P also enjoyed counting the lanterns and exclaiming how they are similar to cable cars! He then ran up and down the corridor while explaining how the “cable cars” travel along the twine.

DIY mooncakes for dogs with toddler

DIY dog-friendly mooncakes with toddler

I’ve always ordered dog-friendly mooncakes for Donna in the past. But I have long wanted to try to DIY and make pet-safe mooncakes for my dog. But what with one thing and another across the months and years, the mooncake mould ended up being stashed in the back of the drawer for the longest time. Oops!

So finally I took it out to make some super fuss-free homemade mooncakes for Donna. Erm, of course fuss-free also means it’s not as erm… professional as the dog bakeries out there so I’m just glad Donna doesn’t have much standards when it comes to food. HAHAHAHA!

Ingredients for our DIY dog-friendly mooncakes

What's in our home-made dog-friendly mooncake? Flaked salmon and egg yolks for the filling and mashed purple sweet potato for the skin. Three ingredients. Preparing for 18-month-old health assessment & vaccination shots at the polyclinic

Little P was due for his 18-month health assessment and developmental screening. He also needed to get his polio and influenza vaccination shots at the polyclinic. We delayed the shots due to the deteriorating Covid-19 situation in the earlier months of this year. He has become a lot more aware of what was happening around him and to him, so I wanted to ensure that I prepare him for what was coming up.

The beginnings of a doctor’s visit and injection-themed tray.

Here are some tools I used.

NOTE: I wrote this post last year August but somehow I just got overwhelmed by life and discover I had not published it. But in any case I find the information still relevant for Singapore parents looking to prepare for their child’s 18 month health assessment at the polyclinic, so here it is! :P

Why did the pangolin cross the road? Singapore toddler book

A Book about Pangolins in Singapore in Chinese & English

On our last visit to the Singapore Zoo, we picked up this book about native pangolins in Singapore. August is the month we celebrate National Day so it seems appropriate to revisit one of our native animals this month.

As a native of Singapore, sad to say I have not come across the Sunda Pangolin who is another native of Singapore.

book review of toddler picture books about walking a dog

Review: Two picture books about taking your dog out for a walk for this Thanksgiving weekend

I picked up these books two weeks ago from the public library, thinking I should leverage on Little P’s attraction to dogs to expose him to more language and also the concept of gratitude.

Two English picture books for toddlers about taking the dog out for a walk. "A Thank You Walk" by Nancy Loewen and Hazel Quintanilla and "Let's go outside" by Kate Riggs and Monique Felix.

Realistic Knob Puzzles Aligned to Montessori – Puzzles Part 1

Hi! This post goes beyond the basic shapes knob puzzle to outline available sources and brands that sell peg and knob puzzles with realistic photo or imagery. It is by no means extensive but just what I came across and liked while online shopping for puzzles.

I introduced Little P to his first single shaped Montessori puzzle when he was a few days from 10 months old. The first thing he did with the knob puzzle was…. to use it as a pacifier.

baby using Montessori single knob puzzle as pacifier.. yes this is what realistically happens...
Looks like pacifier to me, says Little P.
Teething or mouthing baby?
Check out my baby teether review!

Not cool, baby. Not cool.
