DIY Newborn Photography – Throwback to the Newborn Little P

SO… newborn photography. With so many expenses before and after baby arrived, not gonna lie but paying for professional newborn photography was the furthest from my mind.

That didn’t however, prevent me from reading about it in my idle, very pregnant moments. I learnt how most of the stunts you see on social media, required much photo-editing. Because a newborn baby has a very weak neck that needs to be supported.

It all sounded quite precarious to attempt on my own. But somewhere in the recommended first 7-10 days for a newborn to be photographed, I mustered up some deeply hidden energy to get out of bed for a spot of DIY newborn photography with little P. Hah!

Setting up: Costumes & Props for DIY Newborn Photography

This is a no-cost DIY photo shoot. I just used whatever was lying around the house… which was largely items from Ikea.

First, I covered his cot with a sheer white curtain that I had lying around. And I had him changed into the newborn clothes that I would want to remember him wearing.

Posing & Composition – Safety FIRST!

In my mind, I wasn’t going to attempt anything more complicated or perilous than have him lie comfortably in the cot. :P

So yah, not that kind of erm…. artsy shots taken by these professional photographers.

Not that I didn’t attempt one of the simpler compositions I saw before, which involved the baby and his teddy under covers. And even that was not easy.

Because of one very wriggly Little P!

His bunny hat got lopsided due to the wriggling so you can’t really see the bunny anymore! Oops!

Finally he settled down, but by then the blanket has been thrown off half his body and he no longer looks snug and cozy. Who the heck wants to be snug and cozy in hot and sweaty Singapore anyway??? :P

And you can even see one mitten coming off his right hand! Ooops!

Out of all the snaps of him and his little Ikea piglet under covers, I quite like this one of him yawning below. The blanket is not too rumpled and this little piggie is behaving himself. Hah!

Yawn…

So I got a little bolder and laid him in a basket that I lined with an unused cushion cover and an old throw. Usually the newborn is cocooned tightly in cloth in these sort of shots, but that’s too much effort for unskilled me. So….

This photo has been edited. The basket was actually supported by a pair of confinement lady arms. HAHAHA! Because safety FIRST!! ;)

The ONE type of picture you need to take!

But seriously, all of the above are nice to have but not that necessary. What I am very glad to have taken is this shot below that day of father and son. My only regret is… since I was the person taking the photos, I didn’t have one of mother and son nor one of parents and son.

That’s how small he was!

I guess that is the cons of DIY newborn photography for me. šŸ˜…

  1. OK, so they’re not perfect but they’ll bring smiles to your face later.
