I think all of our dogs have probably made the happy face at us when they know a treat is soon to come. This is Donna working on heel and trotting along beside me with her eyes shining up towards me in anticipation. A very silly yet endearing face. I call it the Treat Face.
Of course, she has this other face that Eko is demonstrating very well over here. I call that the Pathetic Face. I’ll show you Donna’s pathetic face another time. ;) Though I think most people will prefer the Treat Face to the Pathetic Face. At least, I do :P
Got a photo of your dog/pet’s Treat face or a Pathetic face or both? Give me a link in the comments and I’ll go see. ; )
thehappyhugger
She looks like such a good student. Thanks for the lovely entry :)
weliveinaflat
She is! Thanks for hosting again, Michelle! Have a good weekend ahead!
Piranha Banana
that is the best smile I have seen in quite some time. What a cutie – I’d share my treats with her.
WOOF!
weliveinaflat
Toss them over! ;)
Tenacious Little Terrier
This is Mr. N’s treat face: http://tenaciouslittleterrier.blogspot.com/2013/10/bw-sunday-9-collection.html
weliveinaflat
Mr N is an earnest student, just look at that face! :D I love the latest pic of him squashing Onyxx too :P
2browndawgs
Cute treat face!
Oz the Terrier
BOL! I make the treat face and the pathetic face too. Both, at times, have gotten me exactly what I wanted…another TREAT!
weliveinaflat
High-five, we all know how to work the treat dispensers well. ;P
Roxy the Traveling Dog
Torrey has the perfect treat face. All smiles and eagerness.
weliveinaflat
Is her face next to Roxy’s on your blog banner the treat face? She’s cute there ;)
Miranda
I actually managed to get all three of my dogs “treat faces” in one shot! It’s also, coincidentally, my Wordless Wednesday post. Weird! http://lifewithisaac.wordpress.com/2014/02/26/wweveryone/
weliveinaflat
That is an awesome photo, Miranda. I especially love the expression on the one in the middle. ;)
Miranda
Thank you very much!
Ashe
To get not only one but several treat faces all at once in the same photo – how good are you (or was it just plain lucky!!!!).
Miranda
It was luck! I’m definitely not that good…haha!
kirbysdawgblog
I love reinforcing sit and lay down every time I can. Donna is so cute!
weliveinaflat
Awesome! And thank you! It’s minimal effort to treat when they do something well with a happy face! And Kirby is a lucky dog with all his new stuff! :)
dorysbackyard
We have three pathetic face here…:-)

Smileys!
Dory, Jakey, Arty & Bilbo
weliveinaflat
I dunno, the one in front looks like he’s saying “look into my eyes and gimme the treat” and the ones behind are like “Grrrr… we’re not gonna get the treat, are we?” and looking everywhere else to avoid seeing it! :P That photo made me laugh. ;)
Will and Eko
I’m with you, that big smile beats a mopey face any day! Unfortunately it’s been too cold for any tongue wagging fun here, but hopefully we get some nice weather soon. I miss those smiles.
weliveinaflat
We’re just the opposite over here. We’re having our longest ever dry spell (27 days and counting) and it’s so hot and bright O.O I’m sure even at home you can find this to do to poke that smile out of Eko ;)
Robin
Isn’t positive reinforcement wonderful? Treats make anything worth while.
weliveinaflat
Hear! Hear! Do you use positive reinforcement with your cats too?
Robin
I do! Overall, my cats are very well behaved and don’t need a lot of “training.” However, they used to hate photo shoots and now they can’t wait because they know that they will either get a treat or get to play a game with Mommy (or both) for putting up with the camera :) They get excited when they hear the camera turn on.
weliveinaflat
That is awesome! I read a lot about positive reinforcement for dogs, but I’ve not really come across anything about positive reinforcement or training for cats because it seems cats do great and don’t need much training. Or maybe I’m just not reading the right things, haha. But it’s just so cool that you do it and that it works for you! ;)
Robin
Cats tend to be taught all of the really important things by their cat moms and their instincts. It is natural for them to prefer using a litter box to just going potty anywhere. Due to their size, they aren’t very likely to jump on or attack people like dogs are. The big things with cats tend to be scratching walls and furniture, jumping onto counters/stove tops/dining tables, and begging for food. If the cat is really shy, trying to get them to be social is another issue. I just posted a video from Jackson Galaxy on Playful Kitty’s Facebook page about positive reinforcement and cats :)
Stacey Van Horn
What an expressive face saying … I did good, huh? Too funny. I also appreciate this face more than the pathetic one. This one means they know they earned it while pathetic is just mooching! Happy Wednesday!
weliveinaflat
Oh yes, we definitely believe in the Nothing in Life is Free program over here ;)
Nature by Dawn
:D Cute! Maya was making me laugh the other day with her treat face while we were walking. I was simply walking and daydreaming when I suddenly got this strange feeling that I was being watched. So I look down and Maya is walking and staring at me at the same time. It has been a long time since I used treats in order to get her to heel. But she must have smelled the treat in my pocket left over from when I was walking Pierson.
weliveinaflat
I Totally Understand that Strange Feeling of being watched!! I get that when I’m tapping away in the study… and when I turn around there I see her staring at me intently at the door!
It’s amazing what Maya can recall even if she hasn’t done it for a long time. Donna always needs more reinforcement across time, probably because I haven’t train her very well in the first place :P
That must have been such a cute and funny moment for you with Maya! ;)
Lessons From A Paralyzed Dog
You know you’re a great pet owner when they give you that Treat Face.
weliveinaflat
That is so true. And I say that because Donna signals fear very fast, and I hate it when I did something carelessly to trigger her into that.
Sonel
Such a lovely treat for sure Mrs. P. Donna is such a happy girl. Great shots! :D
weliveinaflat
Thank you Sonel :)
Cathy Connolly
Looks like Donna does a great job knowing what actually gets that treat :)
weliveinaflat
She does indeed!!
Ashe
I just love seeing the treat face, but here it is the hug face as I don’t give my little guy food (he is a vacuum cleaner and would just get fat) as the prize. He knows he will get a big hug and attention if he does as he is asked and when. Thanks for the great photos of your fur kid’s treat face.
weliveinaflat
Any form of rewards work as long as they fit with your dog and your lifestyle :) Donna was overweight when we first adopted her. That explains why I’m very careful with Donna’s weight. All her treats are cut into little pieces and we do a minimum of an hour’s walk a day so weight management hasn’t really come up as an issue. :) I;m glad you enjoyed the pictures :)
Lindsay
Oh that is so funny. Donna definitely has the “treat face” down. I am pretty familiar with that face, I have to say!
