Encounter with a night cat

Last night when we went down for Donna’s loo break, there was a youngish-looking cat stalking a lizard on the wall. On a whim, I made a meow-ing noise and the cat came towards us curiously. I had Donna sit and stay on one side of me, while on the other side I stroked the cat who was marking me with her scent. But soon enough, Donna would not sit and stay further. She got up and her head moved to sniff the cat even as she made to sniff at Donna’s nose.

I was quite astonished. It was a beautiful moment.

Which of course, according to the laws of perversity, meant that the next moment will cease to be perfect.

The silly dog called Donna, decided to invite the cat to play. She did a half play-bow. She did.

The cat went on red alert immediately and decided she was better off across the road.

We followed. And though Donna would very much like to investigate the cute kitty and see if she wanted to play, I made her sit. With some difficulty, as she was inclined to ignore my commands. Well, more like consul.

Satisfied that the dog would not come near enough to molest her feline self, the cat got quite comfortable, more than an arm’s length away. But she was not going to come any nearer than that again.

If the dog were not so excited to meet the cat, maybe we could have persuaded it to come explore the dark side… :P

  1. My pet dog Toby’s excitement is the sight of a cat, as simple as that. Yours look cool enough for photo shot in front of a cat while mine would have gone all crazy and chased that cat ! :)

  2. Aw! Donna is so sweet, and the cat really missed an opportunity!

  3. Fun! Donna did really well with the cat, despite the unintentional intimidating display. :)

  4. Donna is so well behaved. If my dogs were to come upon a cat (not counting the ones they live with, of course), well, suffice it to say it wouldn’t be pretty!

    • I would have thought, given they live with cats, they would more or less see them as friends (or minimally things you get along with) already! :O

  5. Yes – that’s Ruby’s problem. Her play bowing got her a horrid nose scratch when she was little and now all cats are bad…

  6. Freighter is still trying to learn that lesson. He wants to play with our cat a little too enthusiastically so they are not friends…yet.

    • I think they may never learn that lesson! :P The cats downstairs are suspicious and even when they let you stroke them, one wrong move can turn into a bite and scratch, though it doesn’t tear skin :P

But Go freighter!! You can do it, go forth and convert the cat to the dark side!!!! :D
