Kiyomizu-dera at night (清水寺)

Kiyomizu-dera at night

Taking a break from black and white dog photos today, and sharing some black and white photos of Kiyomizu-dera at night from my recent Kyoto trip. I’m not very good with night photos so bear with me :P

Kyoto temples close at about 4pm in late Autumn, but for a short period some temples were opened in the night time for night prayers, and also hordes of camera and tripod toting people. Kiyomizu-dera, a Unesco World Heritage Site, was one of those temples that was artfully lit up for that period.

The crowd snaked from the temple towards the long boardwalk supported by tall pillars overlooking the hillside. What laid before the eyes was the sea of illuminated tree tops, the dense orange and red foliage glowing from the lighting. And beyond in the distance was the skyline of Kyoto city.

It’s not difficult to visually isolate the traffic control facilitators with the loudhailer from the human traffic, given his bright white shirt and the clear focus on him or the man in the reindeer sweater. I was just easily amused by these individuals that stuck out.

one trip every monthMarianne’s One Trip Every Month challenge is a pretty cool idea that makes you plan ahead of time to get out to someplace new at least once a month. I’ve been meaning to write about some places that we’ve been intending to take Donna to, so this will probably put us on track for that. :)

  1. Love your photos – AMAZING! Thanks so much for sharing your trip :)

  2. Very pretty. Somewhat ghostly and intriguing. Great photos!

    • EXcept for the temple structures and trees that were lighted up, everywhere else was in darkness. A person with poor night vision might have found it hard to navigate. But as there were a lot of people around, it wasn’t scary at all. It did make taking shots with nobody inside difficult. But yes, I was aiming for sort of a gloomy effect with the black and whites :P Thank you!

  3. Cool photos. I would love to see that in person.

    • The photos don’t really show you the place for what it is and why it is a Unesco site. Then again, there are many photos online that do that already ;) Lots of places to see in the world, but you are doing a lot more travelling than the average person already ;) Have a great day Roxy and gang ;)

  4. Nice photos – like that you left the blacks as blacks instead of trying to pull detail from the shadows. :)
