8 Dog-friendly Cafes in Ang Mo Kio

ang-mo-kio-heartland-cafes//Updated: Dec 20, 2016 : Murphy’s & Next Door Deli has stopped operations in Ang Mo Kio.

If you happen to be in Ang Mo Kio looking for a dog-friendly place to grab a meal, drinks or dessert with your dog? Here’s where to go in! ;)

Whenever I visit a cafe or eating place with outdoor seating, I never fail to ask if they allow dogs to sit with us outside.

Here are the places in Ang Mo Kio that gave me the A-OK! ;) I broadly divided them into cafes for meals, cafes for snacks & dessert and also a late night drinking spot that serves meals.

Dog-friendly food shops that allow dogs at the outdoor seating

1. The Workbench

This place gets a queue Friday nights so fair warning. :P That said, I quite like the food there.

One of two cafes across the road from Bishan Park. I liked the Old fashioned chicken stew ($10). Mr P thought the crab in the Crab meat linguine ($16) was overpowered by the sauce.

On the latest occasion I was there (Sep 25, 2016), we had the meat platter and also the blue waffle. The blue waffle was a novelty. I quite enjoyed the meat platter but I think it was average for my dining companion. :P

2. Pocoloco

Poco Loco came recommended by a friend, who saw another friend recommending it on Facebook. Otherwise, it seems to be a relatively undiscovered eatery that doesn’t seem to have much reviews that I could unearth.

But said friend has visited it several times and liked quite a number of items on the menu. P and I both enjoyed the crab meat pasta in pink sauce (pictured). P also liked the tiramisu. As our friend said, the food is surprisingly decent and enjoyable for the price point. Although service was slow when we were there on a weekday night.

Being in the suburbs means lower rentals, so they can offer authentic fare at zi char prices. Says the ex-engineer: “Every common man in the neighbourhood can try our food – we’re competing with S$8 sweet and sour pork and S$15 fish.”

That’s why their appetisers, such as the baked scallops with capsicum puree, are capped at S$12, while pasta dishes range from S$9 to S$12.

…Don’t be fooled by the PastaMania price points – many ingredients are imported from Italy, and most components made from scratch, including dressings, focaccia, tomato sauce, and stock bases. – businesstimes.com.sg

3. Double Scoops

Double Scoops just incorporated an outdoor seating area a few months back. Hooray! Because we do like the waffle with ice cream here. ;)

4. Twenty Grammes Cafe

I still remember the years in my youth, when the ice cream waffle is not something readily available in Singapore. I vaguely remembered a Waffletown in Bukit Timah, and ordering waffle for dinner in some New York City-themed restaurant in town because there was no way I could eat a waffle on top of dinner. Of course, my friends or was it my colleagues, were somewhat confused by my choice to have dessert and “skip” dinner. HAHA. Yes, waffle is all I’m having, thanks for asking.

So nowadays, waffles is not as hard to come by as before. Twenty Grammes (Ang Mo Kio branch) is just the latest to spring up in the neighbourhood. And guess what, when something becomes too common, I just don’t feel like it anymore. HAHAHAHA.

So the item I enjoy the most here is the parfait. Even Donna wants it! :P

That said Twenty Grammes is known for its Salted Egg York Yuan-Yang Waffle with your choice of ice cream. So you can try that for fun. ;)

twenty grammes rosewater cheese cake

Twenty grammes also has on offer a selection of cakes. I’m always a sucker for pretty cakes and I quite like the look and taste of this rosewater cheesecake. Not everyone’s gonna like it though. SomeWhiteCookie’s mom didn’t. :P

5. 21 Cube Artisan Ice Cream

The new kid on the block, 21 Cube Artisan Ice Cream landed in Ang Mo Kio just a few months ago in the later half of 2016. This is their second outlet in Singapore.

And they offer a different format of ice cream to AMK heartlanders who may be finding ice waffles to be passe by now :P

Two outdoor tables seating 4 pax each can be found outside the small outlet. The person minding the store was happy to let Donna sit outside.

Mom! What are you doing in there??? Donna is not used to there being a door between us. Usually we frequent shops that are more open air and she can see me from the outdoor seating even when I am inside the shop.

Lucky I had Donna to keep me entertained while I waited for my order :PP

The menu looked pretty simple. Two choices of soft serve cone flavours and also a small selection of ice cream roll flavours. I ordered the S’moreos soft serve, which took a bit of waiting time…

And it’s here!

Verdict: You need to be a fan of soft serve ice cream, first and foremost. After I cleaned off the surface layer of oreos, marshmallow, etc I got bored with plain ol’ vanilla soft serve :P :P :P But eating this cone is an experience in itself, which is why the cone comes with an attached paper plate that helps to catch all the falling ingredients :P :P :P

What to order | Menu: Assorted ice cream roll flavours to choose from, and soft serve cones if you are feeling adventurous! You can see the flavours available on this post

You can’t get more laid back and pocket-friendly than at My Taste Magic Kitchen. ;) Donna is so comfortable here she practically sleeps flopped on the floor like she’s at home (- – )!

This shop sells an assortment of local snacks and also ice dessert and toast.

What to order | Menu: Assorted thick toast, flavoured ice, local favourites – curry chicken, soon kueh, laksa, etc [ see reviews 1 2 ]

7. Pine Garden’s Cake

Yes, this established bakery and cake shop has an outdoor seating capacity of three tables for customers who want to enjoy the cakes on the spot.

That pandan coconut cake isn’t for me, mum, is it? – –

An assorted variety of sliced cake flavours for every tastebud!

Pine Garden’s Cake is best known for their Lychee Martini Cake, BUT there is nothing to stop you from trying out the fresh new flavours they have this season.

The new flavours – miso caramel ramen and salted egg chicken floss – look intriguing and out off place among the sweet confection. But we were there early morning, so I guess the cakes are not ready for sale yet … would love to see what they look like! :P

Pandan, a very Asian flavour can be dressed to look Christmasy too with coconut flakes like snow ;)

8. Bliss Restaurant

The one on this list with the biggest outdoor area, opens till late and serves a variety of alcohol. See wine list. Hence, Mr P’s favourites here are the finger food to accompany the liquor – luncheon fries and fried chicken skin (pictured: in the pan). The August Special (set dinner) includes a soup, salmon mignon (pictured: plate on the left), dessert and a drink $19.90. Which cost about the same as the $18+ ala carte Dory fish with prawns (pictured: plate on the right.) And that wasn’t a good deal considering 3 prawns cost an extra $5, when you compare it to just ordering ala carte Dory fish mains. :P

Dog-friendly cafes in heartlands neighbourhood

ang-mo-kio-heartland-cafes
Looking out of place in between the more traditional shops in the row?  Interestingly, the proprietors of the shop next door were sharing a plate of sausages from Murphy’s with their school-going child. :P

In general | Unless we’ve been to a shop with Donna before, I will ask just to make sure that the shop does welcome the dog in the outdoor seating. Some places don’t. Some places consider the crowd they are catering to at the time, before they allow the dog or no. It’s usually advised to keep your dogs on the leash and on the floor, to avoid unnecessary complaints to the shops/authorities which may turn currently dog-friendly shops into dog-unfriendly shops. ;)

I’m pretty happy to find all these new cafes and al fresco dining options popping up in neighbourhoods like Ang Mo Kio. That said, depending on the shop, it can be slightly or a lot more expensive than you can stomach from a neighbourhood shop. But if you’re looking to walk dog to breakfast, lunch or dinner on a weekend and don’t mind paying more, these sort of eating places in the neighbourhood will serve just fine. :)

Considering most of these shops just opened this couple of years and Hang Out Cafe is already moving out. It will be interesting to see which are the ones that will last in the neighbourhood. :P

Dog-friendly versus Dog Cafe | I have to say, by and large I have grown to prefer dog-friendly shops to dog cafes.

Dog cafes can be a horror during weekend and peak hours. Too often we encounter dog owners who off-leash their dogs within the shop without supervision. The humans will usually be too busy eating and chatting with friends, while the dogs make a nuisance of themselves, marking the walls and floors and antagonising other dogs. Seriously, if I’m there to eat. I don’t want to see or smell dogs peeing and pooing. That’s the main reason why my preference is always just to get a drink and supervise my dog playing at Dog Cafes. That’s it.

On the flip side, taking Donna out to dog-friendly cafes more often have helped me to positively reinforce her to calmly stay by the table while I order and while I take the time with my meals. When I first started, she will more often than not be standing and pulling, ready to go off. But nowadays, she would lay calmly by the table, eyeing the dogs or looking at the passing traffic. :)

Neighbourhood dog-friendly shops FTW. Donna enjoying her Beams fish chew from earnestmutts.com.sg online store at a cheaper neighbourhood shop selling local favourites. :D

1. Which dog-friendly cafe do you go with dog in your neighbourhood? I would love to check them out! :)

2. I used to grumble that there are no shops selling Ice Cream waffles in Singapore. Now there are so many! HAHA! What are your favourite ice cream waffle flavours?

3. What other places are dog-friendly in your city? It may not seem so, but it’s pretty limited to roadside open-air spaces in Singapore. Besides our 7 currently operating Dog Cafes that provide indoor air-conditioned play spaces for dogs. ;)

      • Christine

lolz… okok. We can also go on Fri nite. Weekday Menu different de. but night time… some food might have run out. Donna and Cookie can run freely~ :)

  2. You have so many cool places to go out to eat. The first place looks really interesting. I saw mussels on the menu. Where do they get them from? China? Around here the best are from Prince Edward Island Canada (a favorite of mine). Thanks so much for joining the hop.

  3. We’re so far out in the country that there are no businesses that are dog friendly, mainly because there are no businesses. We have to drive a bit for a food store, much less a café.

  4. It’s about 25 KM away. If she knows the final destination, not only is it hard to get her to the vet, it’s hard to get her into the car!

  5. Thanks for joining the blog hop! Honestly I don’t usually take my dogs out when I go for food, I’m more apt to pick it up and bring it home. I couldn’t even begin to tell you dog friendly places around here. :-)

  6. Samantha

Thanks for the new update! I live in AMK and this is very helpful :)

  7. Josephine Lim

Great resource! There’s an awesome Cantonese restaurant off Farrer Road – Food R Us. They are dog friendly and let you sit outside with your furries..

  8. Lin

I just took Pluto to Wheeler’s Yard this past weekend and I found the food was quite good, for the humans. Dogs are allowed on their outdoor seatings.

    • I’ve seen posts about it but haven’t found the occasion to visit! Hopefully sometime soon, thanks for sharing!! :)

  9. Jann oon
